The History of Rochford.

Rochford takes its name from Rochefort, Old English for Ford of the Hunting Dogs.

Southend Airport

Nearby Southend Airport started life as a grass fighter station in World War 1. The site was founded in 1914 when farmland between West barrow Hall and the Great Eastern railway line at Warner’s Bridge was acquired for RFC training purposes.

Southend Airport was officially opened on the site on 18 September 1935. As World War 2 approached it was requisitioned by the Air Ministry in August 1939, for use as a fighter airfield by No.11 Group RAF.

It was returned to civilian service on 31 December 1946.

The History of the Lesneys Rochford

Until the early 1980’s, the largest employer in Rochford was the Lesneys factory, who manufactured the famous Matchbox miniature die cast models. This factory closed around 1987.

A housing estate was built on this site in the early nighties and remains today.

The Flood of 1953

Rochford flooded in 1953 and the people of Norway gifted several wooden pre-fabricated homes which still stand today on the Ashingdon Road.

Landmarks

Kings Hill, A large detached property in Rochford town centre, was notable for containing the Lawless Court up until the 19th century.

Rochford Hall

This building is partly privately owned by a family which live within the building, along with the golf course who also own a part of it as their clubhouse.

Rochford Hall was the home of Mary Boleyn, a mistress of Henry VIII and possibly the sister of Queen Anne Boleyn, during Mary’s second marriage to Sir William Stafford.

Rochford Lofts

The old boiler chimney originally constructed in 1946 as a boiler house as part of the Rochford Hospital. It stood for fifty years before being converted in 31 apartments.

Transport

Rochford has two railway stations, both run from Southend Victoria to Liverpool Street station . Southend Airport railway station opened on 18 July 2011.

It also has bus links to the surrounding towns. The Number 7, 8 and 9 service going to both Rayleigh and Southend-on-Sea.
